Ignoriranje prestižnog filma "Kasta: Priča o razdoru" ("Origin") u tzv. sezoni dodjele nagrada teško je razumljivo. "Kasta" je ispala jedan od najzanemarenijih filmova iz 2023. koji nije osvojio neku nominaciju za Zlatni globus, BAFTA-u ili Oscara. Doista neshvatljivo s obzirom na pedigre filma, ali i njegovu kvalitetu.

Aktualna i relevantna tema

Posrijedi je novi projekt nagrađivane i angažirane redateljice Ave DuVernay, nominirane za Oscara za dokumentarac "Trinaesti". Redateljičin film "Selma" o slavnom maršu za ljudska prava 1965. bio je u utrci za Oscara, a njezina serija "Kad nas vide" o afroameričkim tinejdžerima nepravedno osuđenim na zatvor osvojila je dva Emmyja ("Nabor u vremenu" najbolje je zaboraviti kao jedini njezin slabiji uradak).

U glumačkoj ekipi nalazi se oskarovska nominentica Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor ("Kralj Richard"). Konačno, radi se o iznimno ambicioznoj ekranizaciji bestselera "Caste: The Origins Of Our Discontents" Pulitzerom nagrađene novinarke Isabel Wilkerson koji istražuje korijene rasizma i uopće mržnje, što je vječno aktualna i relevantna tema.

Pravo je, dakle, čudo da se Akademija oglušila na ovaj film i nominirala solidnu, ali inferiorniju "Američku fikciju". DuVernay je s ovom "dramatizacijom inspiriranom knjigom i umjetničkom interpretacijom autoričinog života i spisateljskog procesa" snimila nešto nesvakidašnje na granici filma i dokumentarca, nečeg sasvim dramski osobnog i društveno-politički kolektivnog.

Sve počinje od rekonstrukcije rasističkog ubojstva nesretnog crnog tinejdžera Trayvona Martina (Myles Frost); on je, noseći kapuljaču, bio sumnjiv izvjesnom Georgeu Zimmermanu dok je prolazio kroz njegovo susjedstvo vraćajući se iz dućana i ovaj mu je presudio hicem iz pištolja.

O ubojstvu Trayvona piše Isabel koja živi s bijelim suprugom Brettom (mačo frajer Jon Bernthal u nježnoj, dramskoj ulozi). Prilikom rada na tom tekstu za potencijalnu knjigu, Isabel počne preispitivati rasizam i njegovo značenje, sve što je moglo dovesti i dovodi do tragičnih slučajeva kakav je Trayvonov, te širiti priču na globalnoj ravni od povijesti do sadašnjosti. "Danas sve nazivamo rasizmom. Što sve to znači uopće", pita se Isabel dok se priča vraća u prošlost do Drugog svjetskog rata, jedinog čovjeka koji u grupi nacista nije ispružio ruku u pozdrav, spaljivanja knjiga itd.

Poticanje na raspravu

Preko Isabel "Origin" povezuje kaste i kastinske podjele u Njemačkoj, Americi i Indiji, povlačeći nasilne paralele između holokausta, pokoravanja dalita i ropstva Afrikanaca dovedenih u SAD. "Toliko milijuna Afroamerikanaca bili su ubijeni od ‘srednjeg prolaza‘ do zakonske segregacije da to nadilazi područje službenog broja", govori Isabel u filmu koji istražuje začarani krug mržnje i nasilja u povijesti i potiče na raspravu.

Jedna od ključnih scena odvija se tijekom Isabeline večere s njezinom prijateljicom, njemačkom Židovkom Sabine (Connie Nielsen; "Gladijator", "Đavolji odvjetnik", "Vojnik"). "Američko ropstvo je ukorijenjeno u podjarmljivanju, dominirajući crncima u svrhu kapitalizma, koristeći tijela i rad za profit. Za Židove je to tijekom holokausta bilo istrebljenje, izbrisati ih s lica zemlje. Drukčije je", tvrdi Sabine.

Nedugo potom, Isabel izjavi da je ono što su radili robovima poslužilo nacistima kao "nacrt za istrebljenje" Židova u Njemačkoj tijekom Drugog svjetskog rata. Ponekad "Kasta" djeluje akademski doslovno, kao knjiška lekcija iz povijesti na temu reperkusija nasilja, prelomljena preko knjige koju Isabel piše (i napisala ju je u stvarnosti).

No, film se uspijeva othrvati robovanju formuli tradicionalne angažirane drame, važan je i intelektulan, nerijetko i poetičan zahvaljujući DuVernay i direktoru fotografije Matthewu J. Lloydu ("Robot i Frank", "Power Rangers", "Spider-Man: Daleko od kuće") koji je snimio "Origin" na filmu, dajući transvremenskoj drami patinu prošlosti u digitalnoj sadašnjosti. DuVernay je dorasla izazovu adaptiranja izazovne knjige i snimila vjerojatno najambiciozniji "crnački" film od "Moonlight" naovamo. Nešto poput "Kaste" ne viđa se često na redovnom kinorepertoaru.

Ignoriranje prestižnog filma "Kasta: Priča o razdoru" ("Origin") u tzv. sezoni dodjele nagrada teško je razumljivo. "Kasta" je ispala jedan od najzanemarenijih filmova iz 2023. koji nije osvojio neku nominaciju za Zlatni globus, BAFTA-u ili Oscara. Doista neshvatljivo s obzirom na pedigre filma, ali i njegovu kvalitetu.

Aktualna i relevantna tema

Posrijedi je novi projekt nagrađivane i angažirane redateljice Ave DuVernay, nominirane za Oscara za dokumentarac "Trinaesti". Redateljičin film "Selma" o slavnom maršu za ljudska prava 1965. bio je u utrci za Oscara, a njezina serija "Kad nas vide" o afroameričkim tinejdžerima nepravedno osuđenim na zatvor osvojila je dva Emmyja ("Nabor u vremenu" najbolje je zaboraviti kao jedini njezin slabiji uradak).

U glumačkoj ekipi nalazi se oskarovska nominentica Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor ("Kralj Richard"). Konačno, radi se o iznimno ambicioznoj ekranizaciji bestselera "Caste: The Origins Of Our Discontents" Pulitzerom nagrađene novinarke Isabel Wilkerson koji istražuje korijene rasizma i uopće mržnje, što je vječno aktualna i relevantna tema.

Pravo je, dakle, čudo da se Akademija oglušila na ovaj film i nominirala solidnu, ali inferiorniju "Američku fikciju". DuVernay je s ovom "dramatizacijom inspiriranom knjigom i umjetničkom interpretacijom autoričinog života i spisateljskog procesa" snimila nešto nesvakidašnje na granici filma i dokumentarca, nečeg sasvim dramski osobnog i društveno-politički kolektivnog.

Sve počinje od rekonstrukcije rasističkog ubojstva nesretnog crnog tinejdžera Trayvona Martina (Myles Frost); on je, noseći kapuljaču, bio sumnjiv izvjesnom Georgeu Zimmermanu dok je prolazio kroz njegovo susjedstvo vraćajući se iz dućana i ovaj mu je presudio hicem iz pištolja.

O ubojstvu Trayvona piše Isabel koja živi s bijelim suprugom Brettom (mačo frajer Jon Bernthal u nježnoj, dramskoj ulozi). Prilikom rada na tom tekstu za potencijalnu knjigu, Isabel počne preispitivati rasizam i njegovo značenje, sve što je moglo dovesti i dovodi do tragičnih slučajeva kakav je Trayvonov, te širiti priču na globalnoj ravni od povijesti do sadašnjosti. "Danas sve nazivamo rasizmom. Što sve to znači uopće", pita se Isabel dok se priča vraća u prošlost do Drugog svjetskog rata, jedinog čovjeka koji u grupi nacista nije ispružio ruku u pozdrav, spaljivanja knjiga itd.

Poticanje na raspravu

Preko Isabel "Origin" povezuje kaste i kastinske podjele u Njemačkoj, Americi i Indiji, povlačeći nasilne paralele između holokausta, pokoravanja dalita i ropstva Afrikanaca dovedenih u SAD. "Toliko milijuna Afroamerikanaca bili su ubijeni od ‘srednjeg prolaza‘ do zakonske segregacije da to nadilazi područje službenog broja", govori Isabel u filmu koji istražuje začarani krug mržnje i nasilja u povijesti i potiče na raspravu.

Jedna od ključnih scena odvija se tijekom Isabeline večere s njezinom prijateljicom, njemačkom Židovkom Sabine (Connie Nielsen; "Gladijator", "Đavolji odvjetnik", "Vojnik"). "Američko ropstvo je ukorijenjeno u podjarmljivanju, dominirajući crncima u svrhu kapitalizma, koristeći tijela i rad za profit. Za Židove je to tijekom holokausta bilo istrebljenje, izbrisati ih s lica zemlje. Drukčije je", tvrdi Sabine.

Nedugo potom, Isabel izjavi da je ono što su radili robovima poslužilo nacistima kao "nacrt za istrebljenje" Židova u Njemačkoj tijekom Drugog svjetskog rata. Ponekad "Kasta" djeluje akademski doslovno, kao knjiška lekcija iz povijesti na temu reperkusija nasilja, prelomljena preko knjige koju Isabel piše (i napisala ju je u stvarnosti).

No, film se uspijeva othrvati robovanju formuli tradicionalne angažirane drame, važan je i intelektulan, nerijetko i poetičan zahvaljujući DuVernay i direktoru fotografije Matthewu J. Lloydu ("Robot i Frank", "Power Rangers", "Spider-Man: Daleko od kuće") koji je snimio "Origin" na filmu, dajući transvremenskoj drami patinu prošlosti u digitalnoj sadašnjosti. DuVernay je dorasla izazovu adaptiranja izazovne knjige i snimila vjerojatno najambiciozniji "crnački" film od "Moonlight" naovamo. Nešto poput "Kaste" ne viđa se često na redovnom kinorepertoaru.
